Online PvP covers everything from ranked shooters to turn-based strategy. What it won't tell you is whether a game has a private lobby — which is the thing that actually matters when a fixed group of friends wants to play each other rather than strangers.

What to check before you commit

  • Check for custom or private lobbies before planning a group night. Matchmaking-only games will scatter your party across separate matches.
  • Player counts matter more here than in co-op. A PvP game with a dead playerbase can technically work for a private group and be unplayable otherwise.
  • Many PvP games are free-to-play, so a friend who doesn't own it can often just install it — worth checking before you rule a game out.
